Today was Baladeva Purnima, the day celebrating the Birthday of Lord Balarama, Krishna's elder Brother (by eight days). This is Krishna and his Big Brother Balarama relaxing just before their ceremonial bathing with 108 auspicious liquids.

The Service of the Servants
by Kalindi devi dasi
Posted August 23, 2005

I was deeply shocked and disappointed to read Dananjaya's article. There are so many devotees who have given their money, words and life energy to this movement and we are now refusing to offer them support when they need it most. Krsna does not consider those who serve Him as His devotees, but rather those who serve His devotees. This places the need to care for terminally ill vaisnavas above the need to care for the Dieties in the temple. Would Dananjaya allow that service to stop? (Click here for the full article)

A Request for Help
by Hridayananda das Goswami
Posted August 18, 2005

By now you must have heard the shocking news of a terrible accident involving a young devotee, the daughter of Srimati Mahadevi, a faithful disciple of Srila Prabhupada. Mahadevi, Goura Prema, and her older sister, Caitanya all went to India where Goura, a very accomplished dancer, was going to study classical Indian dance. On the streets of New Delhi, in the heroic act of saving her sister's life from an onrushing car, she was herself run over and her legs were severly injured. Unfortunately in this critical situation, Goura, who has undergone unimaginable pain, will not recieve proper medical treatment without payment and her family is virtually penniless. If she does not recieve proper medical care, the consequences will be tragic and lifelong. (Click here for the full article)

My Heart goes out to the devotees from New Orleans involved in the car crash. Now more than ever they should be given full care and attention. If you can donate time or money to them and any other form of help both spiritually and materially i'm sure it would be very greatly appreciated and needed by them very much. Humble request for assistance:
Sankirtana dasi's mobile home lost in fire

by Candrabhanu das
Posted August 12, 2005

Dear Devotees,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

I'm writing on behalf of my dear godsister, M. Sankirtana devi dasi, a dedicated, 28-year disciple of Srila Prabhupada who just lost her (uninsured) mobile home last weekend in a fire here at New Talavan, MS. M. Sankirtana, as her name suggests, is known to many around the world as both an early pioneer of book distribution and as a beloved, longstanding gurukula teacher, a ready, willing and able soldier who always did the needful with unique good humor, cheerful enthusiasm, any nary a complaint for many a year. And like so many unsung heroes of Lord Caitanya's movement she has never asked for any rewards or accolades. She has lived very humbly for her entire career in ISKCON, raising three children on a meager sustenance, the last few years of which have been primarily on her own. Even now she refuses to come forth and ask for anyone's charity, but it's obvious that she needs our help ASAP. We have set up a fund to get her back on her feet and will very gratefully accept your mercy in any form or amount as the spirit moves you. Please make any inquiries to me at jonnk@bellsouth.net and/or send your donations directly to The Sandra Pennington Fund c/o Sterling Art, 501 S. Main St., Picayune, MS. 39466.

Thanking you in advance,
Your servant,

The television documentary, "My Hare Krishna Family," is due to be screened on the 18th of August 2005, on the channel SABC 2 in South Africa. The documentary was made by non-devotees, and may prove quite interesting as it features the famous South African actor Frank Opperman, who is related to a devotee, as well as interviews with HH Mahavishnu Swami, and film clips of several temples in South Africa and Ghana. The idea for the film originated entirely from a non-devotee friend of Frank Opperman, a famous South African Documentary producer, Denise Slabbert. Frank Opperman has won the South African Film Award for "Best Actor of the Year" twice, and is especially popular amongst the Afrikaner community there. The Nature of Acintya
by bhakta Wallace Dorian
Posted August 14, 2005

Many years ago I was waiting to use the bathroom at the Los Angeles Hare Krishna temple. It was a crowded Sunday feast and there was a gentleman standing in front of me who apparently claimed to have lived in the temple a short time and somehow or other the subject of Srimad-Bhagavatam came up. I said something about how great the Bhagavatam was and he looked me directly in the eye and said, "You don't really believe everything you read in the Bhagavatam, do you?" At the time I was somewhat innocent and shocked that a supposed devotee would say that because, yes, I took everything in the Srimad-Bhagavatam to be absolutely perfect knowledge, and still do. After all, it is regarded as "superhuman." Later, I began to start thinking about the nature of "acintya" or that which is inconceivable. (Click here for the full article)

Women in Vedic Culture

There are many civilizations in the world where respect for women and their role in society are prominent, and others where regard for them and their status should be improved. Yet the level of civility along with moral and spiritual standards in a society can often be perceived by the respect and regard it gives for its women. Not that it glorifies them for their sexuality and then gives them all the freedom men want so they can be exploited and taken advantage of, but that they are regarded in a way that allows them to live in honor for their importance in society with respect and protection, and given the opportunity to reach their real potential in life. How we develop our faith
by Vikas Attry
Posted August 1, 2005

Where should our faith be, on human or Krsna? Is is very important for a new devotee in the movement to know where his faith should,on his immediate guru or the lord himself. It is widely known that if we trust a human being and if that human being goes wrong what of the faith of the people on him?If guru goes wrong like it is widely seen in case of gurukula scandal than how can it be expected that the faith of devotees should remain intact.Faith takes a while to become strong and till it reaches that level what should be done not to get carried away by the criticism of the faith. There are things and acts which takes the believer away from his or her faith. How should we develop our faith so that it remains unaffected by anything? Please help.

Avoiding offenses
Author's name withheld by request
Posted August 6, 2005

Dear Vyenkata Bhatta:

I think that your point about using gurukuli in the proper context is valid. However, I believe that you have come to the wrong conclusion. I think it is ok for us to call ourselves gurukulis, but improper for others to use the term in reference to gurukula alumni. This is synonymous with African Americans and the use of the N-word. They use this word amongst themselves and it causes no offense. But I could not use that word without offending them. I realize that to some second generation, using gurukuli, causes no offense. But with many others, myself included, it does. I don't believe anybody is offended by gurukula alumni. You are the Associate Director of North American Communications. So to avoid committing offenses and creating controversy, I ask that you refrain from referring to second generation adults as gurukulis.

Cheers to the Volunteers

While Vaibhavi and I are always biting off more than we can chew, we have been fortunate in eliciting pity from friends and well wishers in different quarters. We could never do most of our festivals, and especially the two big ones, Llama Fest and India Fest, without lots of volunteer help, some of it from far and wide. From Reno, Cindy flew in Thursday night, Herb drove up from Las Vegas, Beth came all the way from Wisconsin, & Lori the judge from St. George, Utah. All worked like people possessed over weekend. I dropped Cindy at the Salt Lake City airport this morning at 7 am. She was going to get off the plane in Nevada and go right to work. Friday morning a fellow from Chicago, working in the area, had all his money stolen by his wife, who absconded. He went to the ATM and couldn't get a dime. Albert came asking for a place to stay and offering to work. Albert seemed a good sort of fellow in a tough spot, so we let him sleep in the motor home. Over the course of the weekend he gave us an incredible amount of hard, selfless work, which made us very glad for our decision. (Click here for the full article)

Religions grapple with LGBT issues

The Human Rights Campaign has recently compiled an interesting and comprehensive list of U.S. religious groups and how each is grappling with gay and transgender issues. Whether extremely conservative and condemning, such as Islam and the Southern Baptist Convention, or more liberal and accommodating, such as the United Church of Christ and Reform Judaism, it is interesting to see how each religious group is handling LGBT issues in this modern age of information and human equality. A section on Hinduism was also recently added.

Washington, D.C. - With the Fourth of July in full swing, over three hundred thousand spectators lined historic Constitution Avenue to cheer on the National Independence Day Parade. Marching bands, military veterans, and patriotic floats formed the bulk of the procession, but what caught the attention of many onlookers was the inclusion of an authentic Indian chariot, bearing carved images of Lord Krishna and accompanied by devotees dressed in traditional dhotis and saris. The chariot, along with exhibitions and food stalls set up at the Mall, were part of the Ratha Yatra and Hare Krishna Festival of India presented by the Washington D.C. Chapter of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). (Click here for the full article)
