10 Day Festival in Alachua
by ISKCON Alachua
Posted August 16, 2003

ISKCON of Alachua is Celebrating Janmastami /
Vyasa Puja with a Special 10 Day Festival
August 11 - August 21

This year, adding to the usual fantastic celebration at New Raman Reti, there will be something very special indeed. To celebrate Janmastami / Vyasa-puja (August 20 & 21) the Alachua, Florida temple will be leading up to the festival with a very unique tribute to Srila Prabhupada. From the evening of Sri Balarama's Appearance Day (August 11) until Janmastami eve (August 19), there will be an evening Gurupuja offered to Srila Prabhuada followed by Srila Prabhuada's disciples remembrances of him. Alachua is blessed with many Srila Prabhupada disciples in residence so when the opportunities arise to glorify him, the atmosphere becomes even more joyful and enlivening. In spite of the fact that Srila Prabhupada spent a few, short years with us, the stories that have been told of his sometimes humorous, sometimes miraculous pastimes with his disciples are always spellbinding and glorious. Without reason or justice
(A response to a question posted to www.vaisnavi.com)

by Brahma Das
Posted August 5, 2003

Question: In my opinion the behavior of a qualified Vaisnava is based on in his/her personal inspiration. One Vaisnava may feel that preaching about adhering to strict Vedic principles as far as possible in this age of Kali is the way, while another may feel that he/she must harmonize and adapt Krishna Consciousness to fit modern society. In the first case, one may feel his/her role is to conserve and protect Vedic values, which are rapidly vanishing from the face of this earth, but this type of preaching will not satisfy modern ladies very much. In the second case, the preacher might be able to enter certain circles and make Krishna consciousness more popular in modern society and with the ladies as well, but this might make the preacher unpopular in the more conservative Gaudiya Vaisnava world. In either case how one proceeds in regard to preaching is a personal choice which depends in many ways on the preaching field. It also seems to me that a Vaisnavi will someday become a guru but that she might need to be qualified to a higher degree than a male counterpart would in order to be accepted. A female guru would have to possess a demeanor that would conflict with the natural feminine qualities that are so attractive in a Vaisnavi and that task would be greatly demanding. After putting my shirts on hangers, I turned on the television and lay on the king-sized bed. Faintly, I could hear Manhattan's traffic outside as a newscaster lamented the unseasonable 90-plus-degree weather. For no particular reason, I glanced at the nightstand. And for no particular reason, I opened the drawer and looked inside. It was empty, and I shut it without thinking. As I turned my attention back to the TV, something bothered me. I opened the drawer again and realized what concerned me: I did not see that ubiquitous Gideon Bible. (Click here for the entire article)

Response to Ananta Purusottama
by Rama Kesava das
Posted August 2, 2003

Dear Ananta Purusottama prabhu,

Dandavat pranams. Firstly let me thank you for your kind letter. I wish more people had your kind of attitudes.

You're right, GALVA does not exist to proclaim our sexual proclivity (far from it!). Rather, GALVA exists to provide support, counselling, etc., for gay devotees, and to counter misunderstandings about gay persons. This is the same reason other Vaisnava groups have been formed too (including Vaisnava Youth and the International Women's Ministry). If everyone were as tolerant as you then GALVA would not even have to exist.

Thanks.

Rama Kesava dasa

What's Up With Arotik?

Srila Prabhupada gave ISKCON the arotik ceremony to use in its temples. Pretty much we just took it for granted and accepted it because it was given by him. Padayatra America Report

July 23, 2003 (from the diary of a Padayatri)

LOUISA, Virginia -- Mike, the president of a philanthropic organization that help kids from Africa, is always bringing somebody to meet us -- friends, co-workers, family. Today he brought a woman he works with. She gave the couple their first Bhagavad Gita As It Is and after hearing about our presence at their place, was eager to meet with us. We saw that she is very advanced in terms of devotion; familiar with Prabhupada's Bhagavad-Gita for some 25 years. She was attentive and being encouraged to take the path of surrender to Krsna. Her desires are bringing her close to a "vanaprastha" style of life, so we explain the Vedic culture of detachment at a certain age to cultivate spiritual pursuits -- doing pilgrimage, diminish social activity and family obligation. She came in front of Sri Sri Nitai Gaurasundar to pray for the desire to surrender, and as the culmination to the prayer reciting the maha mantra (for the first time?). After that she presented some jewellery: "This is for your Deities -- They are very happy, I can see." (Click here for the full article)
