Petition to the GBC (Zero Tolerance for Child Abuse in ISKCON)

GBC Behaviors Unclear
by Name withheld by request
Posted April 28, 2007

It has been 12 years since the GBC have been asked to resolve this Dhanurdhara issue, but they still have not. Ironically, they could have taken care of this in 1996 and avoided the lawsuit.

Most disturbing was the letter of apology to Dhanurdhara -- the abuser. Why did the GBC codify the apology to Dhanurdhara and his abuse victims simultaneously in a public resolution? Has this ever been done in the history of mankind? Does this qualify as normal behavior? Does the Catholic Church or any other religion behave this way? Didn't any of the GBC leaders realize how bad and how out-of-touch it would make them look?

Is it true that Dhanurdhara is initiating in Israel "under the radar" and that he leads large parikrams in Vrndavana? (Click here for the full article)

Charity: Not Mode of Ignorance
by Marcus K. Laurence
Posted April 26, 2007

As I was watching this past weekend's London Marathon I was thinking of all of the dedicated people who give their lives, hearts and souls to the many different causes they run for.

Surely, almost everyone has been affected or knows someone who's been affected by cancer. You will find people running for other causes like leukaemia, bone-marrow transplants and all of the other endless causes, but one of the greatest things, I think, is that they are all working in the same goodness and not working nor competing against each other.

How fortunate I am to live in Guernsey in the Channel Isles, where we have the sixth-highest earnings per citizen and the tenth-highest life expectancy in the world, (Click here for the full article)

Jaya Gaurasundara prabhu is a disciple of Narayana Maharaja. He is a nice devotee, but how would Narayana Maharaja's followers feel if someone collected for a devotee with the same accident in their sanga?

Editor's Note: Chakra posted the initial appeal from Chandrika dasi on behalf of Jaya Gaursundar prabhu and his friends, family and godsisters and godbrothers because we felt that the article would be of general concern to Vaishnavas of all the various branches and communities.

Sanatana Gosvami composed his epic Brihad Bhagavatamrta in two Parts, each complete in itself with a beginning, middle, and end.

Part One narrates the story of Narada Muni's search for devotees who have attained the mercy of Lord Krsna. Sadhusanga.com completed this audiobook in 2004.

Part Two is the story of a cowherd boy Gopa Kumara's gradual evolution toward his eternal relationship with Lord Madan Gopala in Goloka Vrndavana.

Transcendental Qualities of Srila Prabhupada
by Ajitananda das
Posted April 20, 2007

His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, who successfully distributed the message of Lord Krishna throughout the world, was not an ordinary conditioned soul, governed by the harsh laws of material nature. Although he always felt himself to be most insignificant, it is evident through careful study of his life that Srila Prabhupada perfectly displayed the twenty-six qualities of a pure devotee of Krishna, as given in Sri Caitanya-caritamrita.

The Vedic literature states that only one who is free from material bondage can possess these qualities in full. Such a great soul is rarely found within this material realm, and owing to his unparalleled purity and exalted status as an intimate associate of the Supreme Lord Krishna, he is worshipable by the entire world. Dhanurdhar's Removal As a Guru
by Kapila Kuli
Posted April 19, 2007

I would like to give my support and encouragement to the GBC for their action in finally removing Dhanurdhar as an initiating guru.

This decision has been a long time coming, and has been hard fought, so it is a relief to finally see it put to rest.

The key statement in their current resolutions are: Part B. Clarification of the Term "Positions of Leadership"

[Statement]

RESOLVED:

  1. Whenever the ISKCON Central Office of Child Protection rules that an offense is such as to restrict a person from serving in ISKCON in "positions of leadership" (including but not limited to offices of GBC, minister, zonal secretary or temple officer), the restriction must include the position of initiating guru. This restriction shall apply to all previous and future decisions of the Central Office of Child Protection.

A Farewell to Radha Kunda Prabhu, My Friend And Brother
by Yadu
Posted April 17, 2007

Yes, Radha Kunda Prabhu, was and continues to be my dear friend and God Brother and he also became my brother in life. In light of all the types I have met through our sanga over my lifetime, I found Radha Kunda Prabhu to have his very own special and exclusive candor, nearly shameless sincerity, unlike others who posture and position themselves almost in artificial imposition to the mainstream. Radha Kunda was in his own exclusive manner extremely sincere to others of exactly who he was and was not. This I found deeply and profoundly special, even though I saw it as a material weakness on his part.

I was never happier for him than when I found him living in Vrndavan years ago, finally giving up the West for Vraja. (Click here for the full article)

    H.G. Suhotra Prabhu's Cremation
    by Shanti Parayan das
    Posted April 14, 2007

Last night 11.4.07 between 6.30 pm and 10 pm a wonderful cremation took place.

Suhotra prabhu's body was released by the Police and brought from the Krsnanagar hospital to the burning ghat at Navadvipa. HG Gaura Hari prabhu from the Goshal, who has assisted in many cremations for devotees over the past 10-15 years, was the chief pujari.

Observing all the rituals, including removing the plastic wrapping and replacing it with fine new cloth, he arranged a funeral pyre of wood on the banks of the Ganges. In attendance were 6 western disciples/well wishers and around 100 devotees from Mayapura. The fire was lit just before sunset and to the accompaniment of sweet Hare krsna kirtan, Suhotra prabhus remains burnt to ashes.

Comments were made "that the fire was practically smokeless", indicating a soul in pure consciousness. (Click here for the full article)

Thousands Gather for Annual Holi Festival

    by Caleb Warnock, DAILY HERALD
    Posted April 1, 2007

Three thousand people descended on rural Spanish Fork on Saturday afternoon for dancing, a vegetarian buffet, bonfire and ritual witch burning capped with a colored powder fight, chanting, singing and moshing.

The annual Holi festival of colors at the Krishna Temple in Spanish Fork is growing exponentially. The event drew a thousand people more than last year. Some people had to park more than a half-mile away and walk to the temple because so many cars were lined up.

Holi celebrates the ancient story of Holika, a demoness who, immune to fire, burned scores of children before trying to burn a child named Prahlad. (Click here for the full article)

We all know about the hard struggle for existence and how it plays out in our own lives. We are each aware of just how difficult it is to maintain ourselves in these material forms.

There are souls who knew Radha Kund das, and who knew the wife and children that he deserted, eventually, for whatever his reasons were. (Click here for the full article)

Kund Restoration Group News Report
by Uddhava dasa
Posted April 19, 2007

I think that most of us are all well aware of the fact that there are a great many organizations, who are working diligently to preserve the Holy Dham. The Kund Restoration Group is trying to do its part. We are interested in the restoration and preservation of the infrastructure, the environment, the water, the air, the soil and of course the historical landmarks as well.

Srila Bhaktivedanta Narayana Maharaja, the operations director for Kund Restoration Group has been leading this crusade for an environmental clean up, the preservation of the Holy Dham, the water and sacred trees for more than 50 years. Before him the six Goswamis and of course Mahaprabhu himself led this crusade. All of these facts will be clearly illustrated in the first edition of our magazine.

We think the producing video's that show the appalling condition of a great many of the Kunds, and Ghats is essential. From looking at our video, the viewer will also begin to realize that India has made extraordinary contributions to the world, in music, art, the science of yoga and religion. Who is Really the Sacred Cow?

I would also appreciate it if Balabhadra could inform us what he actually intends to do about it. I assume that, as the ISKCON minister for cow protection and agriculture (advisory capacity), he must receive some level of funding and legislative protocol to deal with this type of situation.

I look forward to hearing an update.

GBC Resolutions 2007

For the second year in a row, we are including the "Whereas" section of the resolutions for you to read. The Whereas's are meant to give the reasons for the resolutions. Hopefully they will give you a better idea of some of the rationale behind the decisions.

You will find there are much fewer resolutions this year than in the past. There are only fourteen, and even some of those are routine decisions, such as when the next meeting will be in Mayapura. Devotees (including GBC members) have been telling us for years that rather than coming out with numerous resolutions that many don't even read, better to concentrate on key areas to best serve Srila Prabhupada's society. Devotional Life & Responsible Action: a Comment
by Author's name withheld
Posted April 27, 2007

I appreciate that someone brought up this point of looking at the life of a person and questioning their 'divine' status. Recently, we've heard of the passing of many other Vaisnavas.

I just find it ironic that all of these people have had quite conflicted 'devotional' lives and yet we're so quick to claim their divine status after their passing. It is similar to the sentiment a friend of mine had when her cousin died. He regularly drank alcohol and consumed various drugs. He was not practicing Vaishnavism. And of course this guy had much better behavior than most of these leaders did. And now ISKCON and others are claiming divinity to some if not all of these individuals. Open Letter to Gurukula Proofreaders
by Tamohara das, Director, ISKCON Central Office of Child Protection
Posted April 26, 2007

As the Director of the ISKCON Central Office of Child Protection, I would like to respond to the concerns about the status of Dhanurdhara Swami raised by the "Expert Gurukula Proofreaders." I was also a member of the GBC committee that drafted the resolution that was passed in Mayapur, so I can speak to the intent of both the CPO decision and GBC resolution.

The issue centers on the wording of the GBC resolution that states that whenever a CPO ruling restricts that devotee from positions of leadership, that will automatically include the position of initiating guru. The concern is that the CPO Official Decision on the case of Dhanurdhara Swami restricted him from positions of "management", rather than "leadership". (Click here for the full article)

Public Response to GBC Chairman Bhanu Swami, the Gurukuli Proofreading Club
by (Authors' names witheld upon request)
Posted April 21, 2007

Regarding the recent GBC decision on the Dhanurdhara case, it is unclear whether Dhanurdhara has actually been restricted from continuing to act as a guru. In Resolution 312.B, the GBC tries to clarify what is meant by the term "Positions of Leadership." They do this by specifically including the position of initiating guru under this term whenever it is used in a CPO ruling. The only problem is that the term "Positions of Leadership" was not used even once in the CPO's ruling on Dhanurdhara. The two terms that were used were "management position" and "position of management." Here is the relevant section from the CPO ruling:

D. Managing Within ISKCON As a lifetime restriction, Dhanurdhara Maharaja must not assume any *management position* in ISKCON. (Click here for the full article)

Krsna Enlivens Florida Devotees
by Satyahit das
Posted April 20, 2007

The Alachua and Gainesville temples have become bustling Krsna-conscious places filled with serious-minded devotees. Over a thousand devotees now live in Florida, including many retired temple presidents.

My wife Kelilalita dasi and I just left the usual Alachua Sunday feast with its three prasadam serving lines outside. Every Sunday 300 to 400 devotees attend a stunningly powerful arotik and kirtan, followed by anouncements, book scores of devotee distributors, a class and a feast. Afterwards everyone socializes on the grounds and at around 25 picnic tables under a huge colourfully-striped tent. A number of devotee stalls outside sell books, clothing and musical instruments. Two or three stalls sell prasadam right from the start. (Click here for the full article)

Thank you for your letter with questions regarding cow protection in ISKCON. Unfortunately, over the years the ISKCON cow protection paradigm has been the production of milk. Several ISKCON farm communities have made efforts at training and working oxen along with milk production, but in reality, they can be counted on the fingers of one hand. ISKCON has had its share of horror stories based on the milk only paradigm of cow care

In the Vedic times, the real reason for breeding cows was to receive bull calves so that the activities of agriculture and transport could be accomplished. The second reason was for dung. Dung has many applications such as cooking fuel, fertilizer, medicines, and antiseptic cleaning just to name a few. The third reason was cow urine, (Click here for the full article)

Radha Kund Remembering Srila Prabhupada
by Siddhanta das
Posted April 16, 2007

Radha Kund: As we were walking through the airport, Prabhupada stopped to tell Sri Govinda, whose tilak went up his forehead and continued on top of his head, "This is not a racing stripe. This is tilak. It stops at the forehead." Then I knew for sure how to put on tilak. I was walking and dancing in front of Prabhupada, and I could see that he was heading to an entrance door instead of an exit door, so I ran ahead and pulled the door open for him. When Prabhupada walked by he said, "Thank you." God, it was the greatest thing in the world that he said something to me.

My initiation was the next day. The Radha-Damodar traveling bus party was also there and a lot of devotees were initiated that day. About a month before this, The Nectar of Instruction had been published, and for the first time people heard of Radha Kund. (Click here for the full article)

New Book Alert: Hare Krishna Transformed

E. Burke Rochford, Jr.
288 pages
Hardcover $68.00
Paperback $22.00

"Longtime Hare Krishna observer Rochford shows that devotees, formerly known for their public chanting and controversial fundraising practices, have largely moved out of the temples, taken jobs, and established nuclear families. Using survey data and extensive interviews, Rochford investigates the attitudes of the original members' children (some of whom suffered abuse in the early Hare Krishna schools), the changing roles of women, differing modes of affiliation with the organization, and the increasing influence of Indian Hindu immigrants in what is formally known as the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). His findings are generally clear and convincing, and he lets the devotees speak for themselves in frequent quotes. . . . This story of accommodation within a movement that forged its identity through strict rejection of secular culture provides valuable insight into how new religions evolve."

Remembering Suhotra Das
by Payonidhi das
Posted April 12, 2007

It is with fondness I remember Suhotra Prabhu, though I have had so many dealings with him in the past and if I would recall them all it would be far too entertaining.

I will pay my obaisences to his feet and remember all the sincere devotional service he has rendered to Srila Prabhupada . He was a staunch devotee for many years in Germany assisting Harikesa during those day millions of books where distributed in Germany. I recall one marathon in december 1983 where he was firing up all the devotees, and more than 60.000 Maha big books was distributed in this one month of December.

Later in 1987, I remember he was visiting the devotees in Denmark before the December marathon that is now known as the Prabhupada marathon. He gave a great class about surrender to Krona and gave the example how in the old wild west movies there is often the phrase, if you don't "vice up the will be curtains" Similarly if we don't surrender to Krsna fully there will be curtains for our spiritual life. Later he checked up with us sankirtana men again, and he was asking me about my day on sankirtana, I had met some nice family from Belgium that had bought some books. Practical Advice On Breeding Dairy Cows
by Lakshmi Kary
Posted April 10, 2007

I found myself getting upset when I read recent posts about cows in devotee communities. It's too bad that after all these years the devotees can't learn from their mistakes with cows. Often it seems the devotee community rush in and get cows, or breed the cows without much forethought or realism.

For example, when i visited Mayapur three years ago I noticed they have a large herd of gigantic animals. The majority of the cows seem to have been bred with the huge meat brahmas from the USA. Large animals eat a lot, are harder to handle and can be dangerous. Why get and produce more of such incredibly huge animals? I'd like to know how many bulls and oxen they have in Mayapur that aren't working and are just existing and eating. (Click here for the full article)

The Legacy for Those Who Follow
by Bhaktin Lynne Murray
Posted April 6, 2007

A few years ago, a man in Canada wrote a book about the Holocaust of the Jews during the Second World War. What was different about this book was that this man denied the event; he said it had never happened. When I brought up the topic in conversation with my brother Jeff, who is a historian and the senior map archivist for the Canadian government in Ottawa, I foolishly said, "Well, what does it matter? Everyone knows about the Holocaust. Just ignore the guy."

At that point my brother became somewhat agitated and said, "No, you can't. This is not about now. This is about the future, when no survivors of this time or event will be alive. (Click here for the full article)
