Hare Krishnas enjoy worshipping in Utah

by Lindsay Ercanbrack, BYU NewsNet
submitted by Caru das
Posted April 30, 2004

Being located in Utah County, it might seem like the Hare Krishnas have a hard time fitting in with the LDS community. But just the opposite is true.

[Hare Krishnas host 12 festivities a year, including the popular Llama Fest in July at the temple grounds in Spanish Fork.]

With their lengthy religious names and India-style temple in the middle of Spanish Fork, the Hare Krishnas live peacefully in a community that is predominantly full of members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints'. Interestingly enough, these religions share more than just their neighborhood. (Click here for the full article)

Hare Krishna practitioner Sankirtana Das will speak on the movement at Shepherd College this week

by Crystal Schell

MOUNDSVILLE - Sankirtana Das, 56, doesn't hang out at airports peddling flowers and he doesn't live in a commune with other practitioners of the Vaisnava tradition, commonly known as the Hare Krishna movement. That, he says, was common of American devotees during the '70s and '80s. But as times have changed, so has the practice of its followers. "Devotees of Krishna come from all walks of life," Das says. "They don't have to live in a commune. They own homes and property, have jobs or professions and pay taxes like everybody else." (Click here for the full article)

H.H Sridhara Swami
by Mahakratu das
Posted April 6, 2004

I remember first meeting Sridhara Swami in the mid seventies in Mumbai India. We were working together under Gargamuni, on a life membership program, enrolling life members. In those days we were a bit tough, had to be due to the circumstances of living on a building site (the Temple), having very little money or resources, but faithfully going out everyday to visit Mumbai businessmen and persuade them to give us some rupees to become members of the then fledgling Iskcon. When I first started working with S. Swami, he was quite used to the hot climate and the culture, whereas I wasn't, so sometimes after a long morning program we would head out in our car....when we had an appointment I sometimes would be overcome by sleepiness and would feel a sudden bump or nip on the back, it was Sridhar waking me up. He would have a big smile and pretend nothing had happened. Sometimes we got into good cop, bad cop routines, where one of us would be the nice preacher saint and the other the tough salesman ready to close the deal. We made quite few life members and then parted company for a while. (Click here for the full article)

Krita Karma prabhu leaves his body
by Advaita Prabhu das
Posted April 30, 2004

Krita Karma was much loved by all the devotees passing through Vrindavan in the late seventies and eighties, where he worked night and day to serve the Vaishnavas visiting the dham. He was renowned and admired for his humility and tireless service attitude. Dozens of devotees from all over the world -- Italy, France, UK, America, Germany, Yugoslavia, Switzerland, Italy, Holland, Spain, Australia, South America and and numerous other countries including even the Middle East -- joined ISKCON in Vrindavan under his guidance while he was bhakta leader, a phenomenon that has never reoccurred on that scale since he left the dham. In this Krita Karma fulfilled Srila Prabupada's vision of Vrindavan as a place where people from all over the world could come and take up the process of Krishna Consciousness. His departure from this world will be lamented by all those who remember his enthusiastic and indefatigable service, especially by those whom he made devotees, such as myself, by dint of his inspiration and example. Krita Karma especially loved the Jagannatha deities in Berkeley, whom he served while on Visnujan's Sankirtana party, and returned to Berkeley after he left the dham. We pray that Lord Jagannatha may remember only his devotional service and overlook any failings he may have had.

As a non-sectarian devotee aspirant, I sometimes visit the various local gaudiya vaisnava temples. There is one prominent group who advertise their guru as being a "maha bhagavat" and use this label as a way to canvas for converts. Though they have been successful in their goal to increase numerically, this type of conversion is against the spirit and practice of gaudiya vaisnavaism, and smacks strongly of the odor of the lower modes. It is born of the desire to control and manipulate, which deceptively appears to be faith in the guru, but is as different as chalk to cheese... (Click here for the full article)

Money is often times the major consideration especially for those who desire to get married or who are married, also the 4 regulative principles become another major reason for people leaving, then there are the politics or personal problems within the community between individuals for an assorted variety of reasons. Dawn Gibbs arrived at Delhi international airport and got a pre-paid taxi to take her to the Brahmakumari ashrama there. She never made it - the taxi driver murdered her in an attempt to rob her. He then paid someone Rs.10 to clean the car of the blood, returned to the pre-paid taxi stand and then returned home to sleep, where the Police caught him. India, despite the superficial coverings of what is considered civilization, remains a very dangerous and cruel place as Dawn Gibbs found out. The dangers of a Westerner traveling alone in India cannot be underestimated - especially for women. (Click here for the full article)

ISKCON and Conscientious Objector Status

As the possibility of a resumption of a military draft is now being openly discussed in the US, I was wondering if anyone has any info on how all that played out in the Viet Nam era with ISKCON devotees. I have heard they were granted Conscientious Objector status. Does anyone have any paper work or references that would verify this? Is there some registration with the Selective Service that is on file? While some devotees may be of such spirit that they want to enlist, there are many who may find forced military service inconsistent with their spiritual path.

Memories of Sridhar Swami
by Yasoda d.d.
Posted April 14, 2004

As a first lady disciple of Sridhar Swami, I would like to contribute few words about the memories I have, serving Maharaja from the December 1992, until January 1997.

Joining Krishna consciousness movement in November 1992, I was serving in Govindas restaurant in Stockholm under the guidance of HG Manidhara prabhu - waiting for the spiritual master, praying to Srila Prabhupada. And you came a month later - marching like a general into the battle, pleasant to devotees like a mother, strict like a thunder. I approached you - "please take me to Srila Prabhupada's lotus feet". And six months later in Denmark, you have decided to accept me and see what would happen. (Click here for the full article)

Varuna Forums:
Forum with a difference

by Lorenzo Rubbo-Ferraro
Posted April 13, 2004

My name is Bhakta Lorenzo Rubbo-Ferraro and I have been a devotee for ten years now. While scouring the net I was dismayed at the lack of quality forums for people interested in the Hare Krishna movement. In many of these forums I was lucky to get a reply at all, and in others I received many replies but none of them relevant to my post! I would like to change all this and offer devotees and especially non-devotees a decent forum where any serious question will be sensibly answered within a week. (Click here for the full article)

The First Royal Bath of Ujjain Kumbha Mela 2004
by Panca-pandava das
Posted April 12, 2004

We left our camp this morning (April 5th) just before 6.00am to join up with the Niravani Akhara in the procession of Akharas. There were many different Akharas with their respective Mahants sitting on top of jeeps and Sumos, etc. There were a few on elephants and a few on tractors, but the preferred vehicles seemed to be Qualis' and Sumos. Chakra, can you please post this announcement? It will be of interest to all devotees who are involved in cow protection, especially ox power programs. TAWS is a world leader in the cause of promoting the welfare of working animals, especially oxen. I'm sorry this is such short notice, but I believe that summaries of the TAWS workshop will appear on their website soon after the workshop. Your servant, Hare Krsna dasi.

Memories of Sridhar Swami
by Giriraja Swami & Lokanath Swami
Posted April 9, 2004

We have gathered on a most auspicious day. Srivasa Thakura is one of the members of the Panca-tattva. He lived in Navadvipa-dhama in Mayapur, near the residence of Jagannatha Misra and Saci-devi, where Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu appeared. Later, when Lord Caitanya began the sankirtana movement in Navadvipa-dhama, He and His other most confidential associates would meet at the home of Srivasa Thakura, Srivasangana, and have kirtana throughout the night. The kirtanas at Srivasangana were most ecstatic, and only the most intimate devotees of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu were allowed to enter. In fact, the nocturnal kirtanas at Srivasangana in Gaura-lila are compared to the rasa dance in Krsna-lila. (Click here for the full article)

"The Unorthodox Struggle for Religious Freedom in Russia"

by Anastasiya Lebedev ("MosNews," March 31, 2004)
submitted by Hariballabha d.d.
Posted April 6, 2004

A week ago, a crowd of Russian Orthodox believers filled a downtown Moscow square to protest the construction of a Hare Krishna temple on the outskirts of the capital. Last Friday, a Moscow district court ruled to ban a Jehovah's Witnesses community. In its International Religious Freedom Report for 2003, the U.S. State Department acknowledged that religious intolerance in Russia is slowly being curbed, at least on the state level. It's still questionable, however, as to how many steps forward this process has gone and how many backwards. With Russian Orthodox Christianity as the historically predominant faith, religion has overlapped into national identity for many Russians. Russian citizens that worship differently, along with foreign missionaries, often have to struggle against ignorance, prejudice, administrative pressure and media harassment. Fortunately, their faith itself is a source of hope. (Click here for the full article)

Dear Prabhus,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Amidst all the nectarean glorification of HH Sridhara Maharaja, one other name is constantly featuring; that of his personal servant Mayapur Prabhu. We would like to take this opportunity to highlight a little more this great devotee. Although personally unqualified, we feel that if we can glorify HG Mayapur then maybe we also can steal a little of the mercy available at this time. Gopi-bhartuh pada-kamalayor dasa-dasanudasah.
