Advice for Holiday House Guests by Jaihari devi dasi Posted December 12, 2008 To Serve, Not to Be Served: from the Abhyagata-dharma section of the Susilata-sabhyacara-samhita
Many devotees are going to friends' and relatives' homes for holiday visits. As a houseguest, bring honour to Krsna and exercise courtesy and thoughtfulness.
Don't feel that householders "owe" you lodging or that your mere presence is payment enough. It may be true that you are a blessing, but not if that is your attitude. If you are a sannyasi or vanaprastha, that was your choice. It should not mean that you want the same lifestyle you had before but now want someone else to support it. Someone who invites you to stay does so for Krsna's sake. Accept what they give; do not ask for or take more. Vaisnavas always reciprocate; never take advantage of your host.
Following these suggestions can make one welcome anywhere. Help Fulfill BT Swami's Desire for Africa by Varaha das Posted December 11, 2008 ISKCON missionary activities has been slow in taking off in Franco-phone African countries for the obvious reasons that preaching has become more and more difficult in France since in the 80's when the society's image suffered from being black-listed as amongst undesirable sects. Up till the year 2002, there was just only one center, in the whole of French speaking West African countries. As usual, when Gurudeva was about winding up his tour of the continent, he asked his senior disciples who were with him how they would continue their Guru's mission whilst he was away. I was the first to speak, I told him I would like to develop the preaching in the French-speaking countries. He nodded approvingly and he commented that he was particularly happy that I have taken up this task and more so to see that in such a short time I have already started communicating in French. After over 35 years as a householder, I'm thinking: now's the time to consider leading a simpler lifestyle. After reading the list of demands published in this article, however, maybe I should reconsider my future and plan for a more complex lifestyle instead. Joking aside, whatever happened to simple living? As a disciple of Srila Prabhupada, my understanding is that in the latter part of one's life one should become more renounced and try to find happiness in the simple things. "Simple living, high thinking." Srila Prabhupada said on so many occasions (Click here for the full article) Unlimited Hospitality of the Jariwala Family by Nanda Kumar das (Big Island, Hawaii) Posted December 9, 2008 I read the recent articles regarding the requirements for a preacher traveling in Europe, and have a story to share, inspired by Kamlesh Patel's great response. While travelling with Srila Prabhupad in the early days in India, we were often guests in the homes of Indian devotees and supporters. One one occasion, Srila Prabhupad was in Surat, Gujarat for several weeks, and the entire city honored him with big parades and wonderful, enthusiastic and respectful gatherings. Srila Prabhupad mentioned at one point, "This is a city of devotees!" We were guests, all 20 or 25 of us, in the home of a retired banker, Sri Bhagubhai Jariwala, (Click here for the full article) Beware of False Renunciates by Shyam Gopal Posted December 9, 2008 Many times, I have seen how women are superior to men in many ways. Why then are women vilified as the Unholy Personification of Maya? Has anybody else had the experience of these stiff-necked brahmacaris completely avoid even looking at you (because you happen to be a woman)? How repulsive. Many of these brahmacaris treat women like dirt. Maybe they should just wear their kaupin tighter? Beware of nasty false renunciates. And misogynist websites are simply adding to the already overflowing spill of general misogyny in ISKCON. How repulsive. In Response to 'Arrival of a Demigod' by Kamlesh Patel Posted December 6, 2008 I very much agree with this author. Unfortunately many Gurus/Sanyasis have very high requirements. If you visit India, even today. The Sanyasis you come across literally beg from door to door for they daily needs and they don't make any requests. They literally take what they are given without asking who cooked it and what was used and so on. These are the real Sanyasis and not the ones who have a long list of conditions and requests. The word Swami means controller of the senses and thus if a so-called Swami has very strict requirements with various conditions, as he thinks he may fall down otherwise. Then this proves that he is not a controller of the senses. Thus not fit to be called a Swami. In an effort to serve the Brij-Basis while performing parikrama he has constructed a cart which can be filled with prasadam and books. On top of the cart are Nitai-Gaurasundara and Nrsimhadeva deities. It is a straightforward program — during the day we walk and chant, while some devotees distribute prasadam and books from the cart. In the evening we pull into a village and show Krsna-conscious movies to the Brij-Basis. The movies are shown on a back-projection screen by a digital projector powered by a 12-volt battery, charged by solar panels on the roof. Parasurama takes advantage of his experience as a padayatra devotee and his natural love of chaos and insanity to create an adventurous preaching program, which greatly benefits all those who take part. (You can see a video of the parikrama preaching program at Matchless Gifts.) "At first we were overwhelmed by the huge number of devotees attending Srila Prabhupada's disappearance this year and didn't serve the feast at all," says long-time Vrindavana resident Dina Bandhu das. "But I insisted that we still do it as soon as we could, so as not to disappoint the Mahants and sever our relationship with them." Sure enough, the Ashram heads were disappointed at not having been invited. (Click here for the full article) |

Assistance may include light housekeeping, writing letters, or chanting and reading to a patient. It may also include being present at the moment of death, and helping a devotee to remember Lord Krishna at that crucial moment. Sangita and Jusaniya are both registered nurses. Prabhupada Maha for Sale by Jaya Gauranga das Posted December 11, 2008 I have the original table on which Srila Prabhupada wrote the Krsna book. This table used to be Srila Prabhupada's desk for a number of years. There is a very nice full blown two-page color photograph in the 2008 Vyasa Puja book, where you can see Srila Prabhupada sitting at this table when he had it at his desk; in that photograph Srila Prabhupada is looking at one of the volumes of the fifth canto of Srimad-Bhagavatam. Any way, due to some emergency, I'm being forced to sell this table to whomever approaches me first. My name is Jaya Gouranga das and my telephone numbers are: (310) 945-8848 - my cell- phone, and (310) 204-2523 - my home. Devotees Gave Up Everything for Krishna by a once-upon-a-time temple devotee Posted December 9, 2008 I read Kamlesh Patel's article about the treatment he received while visiting an ISKCON temple. I was impressed with the correctness of what he stated. Yes, it is Vedic culture to offer the guest excellent treatment. It is also stated that one should think of a guest as being as good as Vishnu. Can you imagine that? As good as Vishnu — truly a difficult and razor's-edge endeavor. One small slip, and you can make an offense. On the other hand, I also was thinking about how the devotees were eating off a metal plate and guests were eating off leaf plates. Personally, I don't think a metal plate, which is washed again and again and used by many different devotees, is better. A leaf plate is used once and discarded. That is a cleaner and much higher standard, in my opinion. BBT, due to the limitation of number of years it can enforce the copyrights, can only ensure to do so for probably maximum 100 years more, maybe less, if the expected legal extensions on how long successors of authors can hold the copyrights after an author has passed away, comes to be. If the copyright ownership is not extended by the US govt, then they will be in public domain in 60 years or so. Most probably within 100 years the books will pass into public domain, likely to be published by anyone, like Bible, Koran, Torah, Guru Grantha Sahib for want of better examples. Then it can be restricted on how they are printed only by the opinion for or against it by the members of the public who will be their main readers. Being around some decade in Germany, Swiss, Czech.. I see this is the posthumous child of the previous mentality. Sentiment toward the certain behaviour and habits is still there in our leaders' blood. I wish that person more simple mind than detailed demands. Please be real sannyasi and live now, not in the future. Preparing for a Demigod's Arrival? by unknown Posted December 4, 2008
Preparing for a Demigod's Arrival? Sent to temples in Germany and Switzerland In the Bhagavad-gita Sri Krishna says that his devotee is the same in happiness and distress. He always tolerates all situations, he is not hankering for gain, he is equipoised even in the worst circumstances and is not dependent on the ordinary course of happenings in this world. These ideals should surely be lived by a preacher of our movement. The world has enough people who speak; we need persons who preach by example. JPS Update by Bhakti Caru Maharaja Posted January 5, 2009
www.jpsoffice.com/
Yesterday late morning, I came to Bombay, and went to see Jayapataka Maharaja in the afternoon. Bhakti Purushottama Maharaja, Braja Hari prabhu and Sunil Madhav from Chicago, came along with me. While driving to the hospital, I was feeling quite depressed. Just to think of the person who used to be so full of strength and vitality lying on bed in this condition is naturally painful. I was remembering those early days in Mayapur - going to swim in the Ganges with him. With steady, powerful strokes he used to casually swim across that river. So many incidences flashed across my mind - once Radha Jivan lost his breath in the middle of the river and panicked and started to cry out for help, and Jayapataka Maharaja came to his rescue and carried him to the shore. Guru Kripa, (at that time a Swami), used to come to Mayapur with his tough group of devotees, called the Nama Hatta, from Japan. Lokanath Swami by Gaura Krishna das (LOK) Posted December 31, 2008 This is an invitation to all of you to come to our new ISKCON Temple in my birthplace (Aravade, Maharashtra, India), on the auspicious occasion of Sri Nityananda Trayodasi, to welcome Their Lordships Sri-Sri Radha-Gopal on the 6th, 7th, and 8th of February 2009. The inspiration for this project is a statement Srila Prabhupada made to me in a letter dated July 30, 1977. After I gave a report to him about the Second Annual Hare Krishna Utsav at Aravade. Srila Prabhupada wrote: "You should train one farmer from your native village so that he can actually become an ISKCON representative there." The Hare Krishna Utsav has been celebrated yearly for the last 31 years in Aravade, with more than 20,000 villagers attending it. Many of us should follow them. But if due to disease we need special help, then we don't need to take sannyasa. Sannyasa is for a simple lifestyle. A sannyasi leads a life which is not dependent on others but is dependent on Krishna. This person, however, cannot even get water for neti. He expects most things to be done for him. It is not surprising, when the position of sannyasi comes with the perk of free servants. What We Wish for Ourselves, We Desire for All by Jagad Bharat das (Brazil) Posted December 9, 2008 The "minimal facilities" this future sannyasi is demanding should be given to all devotees living in ISKCON ashrams — or would you be happy eating the same very spiced kichri every day with some potatoes and a cup of water, living in a dirty place, no cleanliness, no care for your health? I donĀ“t think so. He is not demanding ghee, sweets, silk dhotis, servants, etc. He is just requesting, or suggesting, that which is necessary for a vaishnava life. Vaishnavas should be clean, healthy, in good state of mind, etc. Good food is basic for a simple life. A clean place to live is basic for a human life. So what is the problem? Friends of the BBT December Newsletter by Dina Sharana dasa Posted December 9, 2008 Full Version: Click Here "All the Book Distributors Will Go Back to Godhead" The Story of the Prabhupada Marathon by Madhava Smullen It may surprise you to learn that with over 464 million copies sold since 1965, Srila Prabhupada's books have reached more souls than those of bestselling author Stephen King, who began his career at roughly the same time. To date, they've even sold more copies than the record-breakingly successful Harry Potter series-an amazing achievement for books on a spiritual philosophy relatively new to the western world. How? This Christmas, remember that the Prabhupada Marathon, held every December, has been a major contributing factor.
